I am a postgraduate student at Christ University, Bangalore. I am currently pursuing an MA in English and Cultural Studies. This portfolio aims to show what I learned throughout the course "Folklore in Context."
The "Folklore in Context" portfolio is a comprehensive exploration of folklore as a vibrant and essential cultural practice that shapes and reflects the identities of communities. Initiated with the powerful assertion that "Folklore without fieldwork is fakelore," the portfolio aims to underscore the indispensable role of direct engagement and empirical research in the study of folklore. Objectives include deepening the understanding of oral traditions and their impacts on community cohesion, exploring the transformation of folklore amidst modern influences, and documenting the interplay between folklore and cultural identity through various mediums such as seminars, field visits, and workshops. This portfolio not only serves as an academic exploration but also as a dynamic repository of folklore's evolving nature in contemporary and traditional contexts.
My journey through the "Folklore in Context" course has been profoundly transformative, enriching my understanding of cultural narratives and their pivotal role in society. Engaging directly with folklore through fieldwork challenged my preconceptions and opened new vistas of knowledge. From interviewing Qawwali artists to participating in workshops about field methods, each experience enriched my appreciation for the subtle complexities of folklore. This course was not just an academic undertaking but a personal voyage into the heart of diverse cultural expressions. It instilled in me a deep respect for the stories we carry and their power to connect us across generations, making me a staunch advocate for the preservation and appreciation of folklore as a living, breathing aspect of human culture.
